Visit on 28 August 2009 - MINDSville

Hey PAT Volunteers,

It is yet another successful mission for our Friday troopers at MindSville!!! Although we moved to a smaller room due to the unavailability of the multi-purpose hall. The cheers & enthusiasm were huge from all our friends and not to mention the turn out of our furry friends-a total of 10 dogs!

As usual, the residents can't wait to take over the dogs to start all the activities-walking, brushing, patting, feeding, etc. The room was turn into a mini bazaar, noisy & full of life. Although some of the residents like Nanu was calling every dog "Diva" . Its good to know he's slowly remembering names:-) Cheng Nam, who is not too comfortable with dogs , warmed up to Rosie & planted a kiss at Rosie's back!!!

The residents were so delighted to have 2 "newbies" to cuddle with-Pica & Maggie. Despite their "debut" appearance with TDS, they behave like seasoned therapy dogs. Doing their part so professionally!! Way to go for our two new "gal friends" & I am sure "nanny" Corrinne must be really proud!!

Dance performance was also on the agenda, firstly by our very own-Chewy!! He did his trademark "ballerina" twirl. That boy is so good & did it more elegantly than I would have!! It was followed by more dancing from one of the residents, which I never got to know her name. She is the dancing queen of the lot!! I can tell Charlie was game to join her for another boogie woogie just like the last visit if not for the huge "admirer" of Stallion who was holding so tightly on Stallion's leash!! She just can't take her eyes off our gentle giant!!

It was such a fun afternoon that an hour just passed so quickly when you are having a blast.

Three Loud Cheers to:

  1. Helen Lea with Rosie(Lab Retriever)
  2. Melinda Ann with Chewy( Catalan Sheepdog) & Cleo( Long Haired Dastchud)
  3. Mabel Ho with Silky( Golden Retriever)
  4. Charlie Ho with Stallion(GSD)
  5. Corrinne Choo with Flapper(Lab Retriever), Pica(Shih Tzu) & Maggie(Miniature Pinscher)
  6. Alicia Israel with Magic & Diva( Lab Retriever)

Big whistle to:

~~ Janelle Teng, our wonderful helping hand

Finally, huge thank you to:

~~ Jessamine & Ian, who came as observers for the session. Hopefully, we'll be able to see their dogs joining our "pack" real soon.

A big bear hug to each & everyone for spending time & sharing love with our friends at MindSville. Their world is brighter with people like you-Showing you care:-)

In the meantime, please check our website for the next visit & update. Till next time, work hard, play harder & love more :-0

Cheerio,
Alicia, Magic & Diva

Visit on 16 August 2009 - Ward 66A Institute of Mental Health (IMH)

Dear Fellow Volunteers,

I'm happy to inform everyone that we have finally resume our volunteering work at IMH Ward 66 on 16 August 2009, Sunday. After a long break, I'm glad to say that the residents did not forget us and many are happy to see us and our dogs. We had a great time catching up with one another and the residents enjoyed themselves giving treats to the dogs, throwing toys for some of them to retrieve, watching some of the dogs do tricks and even just chatting with the volunteers.

I would like to thank the following volunteers and their dogs for their time and effort in bringing warmth and joy to the ladies at IMH Ward 66.

1. Amanda Richardson with Tixi (GSD)
2. Charlie with Stallion (GSD)
3. Eunice Wang with Baileys (Shetland)
4. Soo Fen and daughter, Emily Lui with Polar (Samoyed)
5. Bian Yu Wei with Rafa (Miniature Schnauzer)
6. Lishan and father, Shum Chin Yang with McMug (Jack Russell Terrier)
7. Lee Say Hoon

Let's look forward to our next visit and have a great week ahead :)

Best Regards,

Visit on  8 August 2009- Bethany Methodist Nursing Home (BMNH)

Hi everyone

Many many thanks to those who made time for this visit, despite the long National Day holiday weekend. Although our numbers were not big, we certainly made a BIG impact!

This being the eve of National Day, and with patriotic Singaporeans among us, our visit started with the singing of the national anthem. The residents were pleased to receive a national flag each, which they waved as we played a CD of the classic national day songs such as Home and Count on Me Singapore. The residents found great pleasure in holding the small dogs such as Yaki, and patting the big ones as well. We also had a hilarious time being entertained by the dogs, in particular Mei Mei, Magic, Diva and Stallion. The residents had a ball of a time throwing a ball and dumb-bell for the dogs to fetch. And it was heartwarming to see the volunteers renewing their friendship with the residents and chatting with them.

My heartfelt thanks to the following who made a difference:

1. Alicia Israel and niece Pei Xuan, with Magic and Diva (Lab Retrievers)
2. Fiona Yeo with JJ and Mei Mei (JRT)
3. Michelle Loh with Yaki (Datschund)
4. Charlie Ho with Stallion (GSD) and Silky (Golden Retriever)
5. Emily Lui and mum Soo Fen, with Polar (Samoyed)

We also welcomed 2 observers, Bee Na and her mum, who will be sending their dog Pebbles for temperament assessment. We hope to welcome them to the team soon. Many thanks also to the Pioneer Junior College students who helped to handle the dogs.

We hope to see many more volunteers come join us at these visits. It does take discipline to set aside time and make the trip, but my experience has been it is always worthwhile and rewarding. So, cut the shopping, napping, lazing by the beach, etc, if only once a month, to do this -- for the people who really look forward to meeting you and your dog!

cheers
Soo Fen

Visit on 14 August 2009 - Thong Teck Home for Senior Citizens (TTHSC)

Hi Fellow Volunteers,

It was a joyous day of visit to TTHSC. We were warmly welcome from the residents with sweet smiles and excitement in seeing us back after a long break. They really miss us as much as we do. Our therapy dogs brought much cheer and laughter to the residents when they did doggie tricks. In return, they earned yummy treats
Stallion, the lean and hungry clown, went straight to Mdm Khoo Chan who always ready with her tubful of treats to feed him and other dogs.

My heartfelt thanks to the following helping hands and healing paws for their time and efforts to cheer the ever welcoming senior citizens

  1. Alicia Israel with Diva and Magic / Labrador Retiever
  2. Helen Lea with Rosie / Labrador Retriever
  3. Melinda Ann Michael with Chewy / Catalan Sheepdog and Cleo / Datshund
  4. Doris Chang - Helping Hand
  5. Mabel Ho with Silky / Golden Retriever
  6. Charlie Ho with Stallion / GSD

We cannot thank these volunteers enough for their continued support, certainly not as much as the sweet smiling and laughing senior citizens of Thong Teck Home. They provided the best rewards for our hearts.

A warm welcome to Helen Lea and her therapy dog Rosie who came to TTHSC for the first time. They are seasoned PAT volunteers because they were PAT volunteers in HongKong before they moved to Singapore. A warm welcome also to Doris Chang who came and helped to handle Diva.

Please take note that our next visit is to SWAMI Home on this upcoming Friday, 21st August. Your presence and support are appreciated.

Warmest regards
Charlie Ho
