Thong Teck Home for Senior Citizens (TTHSC)
Hi, fellow volunteers,
We had a great turn-out of 15 helping hands and 13 healing paws. A big
Thank You to all of you for the great response especially to those
volunteers who took time off from work. Volunteers and their therapy
dogs made their rounds of PAT session talk to the residents who were so
eager to pet the dogs. The smiling faces of the residents could tell how
much this was appreciated.
Following to our PAT session, we went on to play some of our PAT
activities in which we hope to achieve the therapeutic goals. Do not
underestimate the significance of PAT play with therapy dogs. Through
play, our PAT recipients can develop mental abilities and physical and
social skills
We have covered the following activities:
Cognitive / Communication / Socialisation Therapy
- flash card play - to encourage the senior citizen to read and speak.
It gives them a sense of fulfillment when our therapy dog obeys her
command
- counting number play - to help the senior citizen and/or dementia
resident to work on mental abilities. It gives her a sense of
fulfillment when our therapy dog picks the right number.
- doggie dress up play - to encourage creativity and interaction among
the senior citizens. It provides a focus for conversation. It also
serves as a confidence booster and gives them a sense of achievement at
the end when they see their own creations.
Motor / Physical / Sensory Therapy
- throwing dumbbell (different size and weight) for therapy dog to
retrieve. This is a form of physiotherapy for the old folks who may be
unwilling to do their regular exercise.
- dancing dog play - it offers some kind of entertainment or welcome
distraction from pain and physical weakness
Once again, my heartfelt thanks to the following volunteers
- Soo Fen with Polar / Samoyed
- Tricia Tan with Freo / Silky
Terrier
- Sabine Schex with Stella /
Australian Shepherd
- Louiza and hubby with Grace &
Beatrice / Spoodle
- Melinda Ann Michael with Chewy /
Catalan Sheepdog
- Amanda Richardson with Tixi / GSD
- Monique Hsu and sons with Nani /

- Evangeline Koh with Pepper &
Perdi / Shetland Sheepdog
- Vincent Ho with Gigi / Beagle
- Charlie Ho with Silky / Golden
Retriever & Stallion / GSD
- Paola Ng
- Alicia Isreal
- Constance Ong
- Ma Lee
Please join me in welcoming volunteers,
Constance Ong and Alicia Isreal. Their dogs had gone through the
temperament test. I am sure they will join our PAT team in our forth
coming next visit(s). We aslo welcome Paolo Ng and Ma Lee who came in as
helping hands who help us to handle our dogs and interact with the
residents.
Mediacorp Channel 5 TV crew and senior producer were at TTHSC. They
filmed our PAT session and our activities for their new women's talk
show about pet. We are also invited to go down to the studio with our
dogs on 30/3 to share our PAT experiences with channel 5 host Eunice
Olsen and the audience. The air date of the episode has yet to be
confirmed. I shall keep you posted in due course.
The upcoming PAT visit for next week is to AWWA Special School for
Children, Friday 7th March, and to BMNH on Saturday 8th.March. Please
check out our website for the details.
Warmest regards

Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled (BHID)
Hi, fellow volunteers,
Our enthusiastic residents are a great host who greeted us warmly with
open arms and handshakes. We did not waste much time as our therapy dogs
took the initiative in moving around interacting with the residents.
TDS hard core volunteers and their therapy dogs continue to bond with
residents, interacting and bringing comfort and companionship. My most
heartfelt thanks to:
- Hilda Lim with Pepper / Mini
Schnauzer
- Pearly Cheong with Gabriel / Rough

- Joshua Koh with Sammuel / Burnese

- Elaine Lui, sis Emily and mum Soo
Fen with Pola / Samoyed
- Eunice Wang with Baileys / Shetland
Sheepdog
- Richard Soon with Bubbles / Golden

- Mabel Ho with Silky / Golden

- Charlie Ho with Stallion / GDS
I had a great time playing flash card with some of the residents.
The play encouraged the residents to read and speak the words ...
sit, down, stand and come. It gave them a sense of fulfillment when
Stallion obeyed their commands that brought cheers to those around
him/her. We hope to continue this flash card play for the target
residents during all future PAT sessions.
Once again, through team work we could achieve:
Cognitive / Communication / Socialisation Therapy
- encourage residents to call and remember the names of the dogs.
- flash card play to encourage residents to read and speak and give
commands to the dogs
- stimulate conversation
Motor / Physical / Sensory Therapy
- walking exercise with therapy dogs
- encourage residents to stroke and touch the dogs
I believe you have seen my earlier email about the up-coming PAT
visit to TTHSC on Friday 29th February. We plan to include some of
our "customise" activities for TTHSC residents. Mediacorp Channel 5
will be there to film our PAT session. Please come and join us in
bringing joy and happiness to our fellow senior citizens of TTHSC.
Warmest regards

Institute of Mental Health (IMH)
Hi fellow volunteers,
Our die-hard volunteers and doggies made
time for our friends at
IMH,
despite being busy with the Chinese New Year festivities. In
the spirit of Chinese New Year, we presented the residents of Ward
66A with 2 mandarin oranges each. They also had some desserts, candy
and fortune cookies, which, by the looks of it, they enjoyed very
much!
During the session, the residents
interacted with the volunteers as well as our therapy dogs. We
sorely missed some of our faithful dogs, in particular Vickie (maltese)
and Bambi (silky terrier) who sadly have not been well. We wish them
both a speedy recovery and hope to see them back in action again
soon. We were also very pleased to have Chin Yang, who is our
regular volunteer Lishan's father, join us with her dog McMug. It's
good to know that even though Lishan is away, her dad can represent
the father and daughter PAT team, and we hope to see Chin Yang join
us on a regular basis.
Many thanks to the following volunteers
for giving up their precious Sunday afternoon nap / golf / CNY
visiting etc etc, to come with their beloved therapy dogs to bring
cheer to the residents:
- Rebecca Kwan with Cocoa /
Maltese
- Mabel Ho
with Silky / Golden Retriever
- Charlie Ho with Stallion /
GSD
- Tricia Tan with
Freo / Silky Terrier
- Malcolm Koh with Petrus /
Siberian Husky
- Shen Chin Yang with McMug /
Jack Russell Terrier
- Doris Boo
- Elaine Lui, sis Emily and Mum
Soo Fen with Polar / Samoyed
Through this session, we achieved the
following:
Cognitive / Communication /
Socialisation Therapy
- encourage patients to remember the
names of the dogs.
- provide stimulation, conversation
and companionship
Motor / Physical / Sensory Therapy
- encourage therapy exercise by
walking with the dog
- helping the residents who are
depressed and lonely to response more subtly to the
unconditional love that our therapy dogs offer.
We hope to see you all at our upcoming
visits to MINDsville on Fri 22 Feb and BHID on Sat 23 Feb. We need
YOUR support to make a difference to the patients / residents.
Please check the website
www.tdspore.org for details.
Cheers

15 February 2008 - Sunshine
Welfare Action Mission Home (SWAMI Elderlink)
Hi, fellow volunteers,
Regular week days team made our
Chinese Lunar New Year visit
to
SWAMI Home with
mandarin orange and good wishes. My heartfelt thanks to the
following volunteers who brought their therapy dogs to help the
ever cheerful dementia residents welcome in the Year of the Rat.
- Sabine Schex with Stella
/ Australian Shepherd
- Louiza Chan with Grace &
Beatrice / Spoodle
- Vincent Ho with Gigi /
Beagle
- Melinda Ann Micvhael
with Cleo / Dachshund and Chewbaca / Catalan Sheepdog
- Poalo Ng - helping hand
- Charlie Ho with Silky /
Golden Retriever & Stallion / GDS
The dementia residents at the
physiotherapy room did not miss out the CNY mandarin orange as
Melinda with Cleo and Chewy, and Sabine with Stella, were
there to bring CNY wishes to them.
We had a wonderful time interacting
with the dementia residents, and as usual, they were eagerly
taking our therapy dogs for a walking exercise.I had a good time
talking to a cantonese speaking dementia resident. I told her
that Stallion is bilingual i.e. understand cantonese and english
commands. She did not hesitate giving commands to Stallion in
cantonese and was thrill when Stallion obeyed the commands
rightly.... frankly speaking, I was helping Stallion to
undestand her cantonese commands ... secretly I used sign
language.
Our achievements are:
Cognitive / Communication /
Socialisation Therapy
- encourage dementia
residents to communicate and talk about their experience
with dogs.
- asking a dementia
resident to give a sequence of commands in her mother
tongue to our dog, thus, it gave her a sense of
fulfillment when the dog could obey her commands.
Motor / Physical / Sensory
Therapy
- Walking a dog, throwing a
dumbbell, reaching to touch and bending to pet the our
therapy dogs.
Please visit our website:
www.tdspore.org for the details of our next visit.
