2. Fiona Seow with Reegan and Quinton (Golden Retrievers)

3. Julie Yeow with Nana (White Swiss Shepherd)

4. Ang Lay Hui with Hayden (CKCS)

5. Rachelle Gehrig with JJ (Golden Retriever)

6. Ray Sham Karam Singh with Cadbury (Toy Poodle)

7. Steven Pang with Misty (Golden Retriever)

8. Valerie Gan with Sable (Sheltie)

First time visits

We welcome those who joined us for the first time at this home, as well as those who came for observation sessions. We certain hope to see more of you in the future!

1. Choi Pei San (observation)

2. Rachelle Gehrig with JJ (add first time at MindsVille)

Notes and highlights

Our visit was indeed meaningful; special moments and observations include:

- Walking: Many were enthusiastic about walking the dogs, and some walked tirelessly round and round the hall, giving one and all good exercise

- Obedience demo (fetching): Nana, Hayden and Stallion were the stars of fetching, amusing all and making some of the residents exercise their arm and aim.

- Obedience demo (down-stay): An impromptu group down-stay was organized, with Nirmala and Beng Chuan unwittingly causing distraction by coming to pet Sable and Hayden. Nonetheless, the small dogs, Cadbury, Sable and Hayden were the best “stayers”.

- General mood: It was as usual a bustling hall full of good cheer. The residents obviously enjoyed the companionship of our dogs.

Once again, my heartfelt thanks to all. See you at the next visit!

Warm regards,

Valerie

Visit on 19 June 2011 - Ward 66A Institute of Mental Health (IMH)

Hi everyone,

Wow, we had a great turn out of volunteers and dogs last Sunday! As Ward 66A was under going cleaning, we had the sessions in ward 66B instead. But the change in venue did not change the mood of TDS volunteers and the residents. We took a group of 7 residents down for a walk along the corridor on the first floor, chit chatting with them along the way. And we have the other volunteers who stayed behind in the ward, allowing the residents to pat their dogs and watch them do simple tricks :)

A great thanks to the following volunteers and dogs,

1) Janice Gan and  Prince (Golden retriever)

2) Janice Ho and Zechy (Labrador retriever)

3) Chin Yang, Lishan and McMug (JRT)

4) Amy, Steven and Doby

5) Su Ling and Bibi (Pug)

6) Hui Ru, Stanley and Gucci ( Westland terrier)

7) Fiona and Reegan and Quinton (Golden retrievers)

8) Michelle, Hui Yuan and Piggy ( Chihuahua)

9) Lyn (observer)

10) Triston (helping hand)

11) Frances (helping hand)

12) Linette Heng and

Toby (Poodle)

Looking forward to our next visit. If anyone has any ideas of activties we can do with the residents and our doggies, please feel free to email me :)

Best Regards,

Lishan

Visit on 17 June 2011 - Sunshine Welfare Action Mission Home (SWAMI)

Hi Fellow Volunteers,

We had a wonderful afternoon at SWAMI. Though noticeably, there were less residents during our visit to the dementia ward.

Daniel told us the bad news that some of them were admitted to hospital. We want to wish them a speedy recovery and hope to see them next month when we are back.

A big warm welcome to Rachelle and JJ, it was their first TDS visit as full fledged volunteers!!! They were great, settling into the routine as if they have been with us longer. JJ was a hit, showing off and doing tricks for the ladies.

I met Alice for the first time. She has beautiful blue eyes and have a great memory. She managed to remember all the dogs' names, Rachelle and my name. She shared with me, the story of her dog. The other group of ladies, as usual kept insisting that we only come once

a year, and we just played along with them :). Only a couple of them wanted to walk, so Chou Chou and Reegan were only too happy to obliged.

Piggy was as usual the star of the show, sitting on the laps, enjoying the pats given to her.

Julie was unable to join us on this visit with Nana, as she was down with flu. We wish her a quick recovery and hope to see them next time.

I would like to extend my appreciation and thanks to all those who have given up their afternoon to visit the residents:

1. Gwen Wong with Chou Chou/Chow Chow

2. Fiona Seow with Quinton & Reegan/Golden Retrievers

3. Rachelle with JJ/Golden Retriever

4. Wong Hui Yuan with Piggy/Chihuahua

5. Chai Kar Yee (Helping Hand)

Than reaching down and helping to lift someone up.

Thanks again and see all of you next month.

Warmest,

Fiona Seow

Visit on 11 June 2011- Bethany Methodist Nursing Home (BMNH)

Dear TDS volunteers,

It was a rainy saturday, luckily it cleared up for us when we got to Bethany. We had a great turnout today, but Soo Fen our home i/c was solely missed. She has a busy moving weekend ahead and we wish her well in her new home.

Our start to the visit was delayed due to a birthday celebration in the Hall of Praise with another group. All of us were raring to go, especially our ever eager doggie volunteers. Nanthini and her brother Kabilan were really kind to bring some lovely snacks for our residents. Unfortunately, it was past their snack time, so the snacks will be kept for sunday's snack time.

Pei Lai, one of the residents was his usual jovial self, calling out to me. Since I was not able to converse in Hokkien, Charlie had to come to my rescue. Despite that, we had a great conversation with him trying to get him to remember my name, and something along the line of striking a lottery win?? Most of the hour the volunteers were hard at work, chatting with the residents, along with the dogs doing what they are good at :) getting pats and lots of treats.

We also had the privileged of new potential volunteers joining us as observers, Jennifer, Elvin and Tristan. They were great, helping to handle the dogs and going around to get to know the residents. Jennifer and Elvin will be bringing their dog, Yuki for the temperament test soon, while Tristan is joining us as a human volunteer. It won't be long before they will become our full fledged volunteers.

I would like to extend my deepest appreciation and thanks to all who has turned up and shared their valuable:

1. Steven and Diana with Misty (Golden Retriever)
2. Wong Hui Yuan and friends with Piggy ( Chihuahua)
3. Valerie Gan with Sable (Shetland Sheepdog)
4. Nanthini and Kabilan with Ram (Shetland Sheepdog)
5. Michelle Loh with Yaki (Dachshund)
6. Charlie Ho with Stallion (German Shepherd)
7. Sharin Lim with Hugo (Golden Retriever)
8. Christina Lim with Brinkley (Golden Retriever)
9. Fiona Seow with Quinton and Reegan (Golden Retriever)
10. Goh Kunshan (Helping Hand)
11. Loh Wei Chin (Helping Hand)

A big thank you again and I hope too see you all next month.

Warmest,
Fiona Seow with Reegan & Quinton

Visit on 10 June 2011 - Thong Teck Home for Senior Citizens (TTHSC)

Hi fellow volunteers,

We had a team of 7 volunteers and 5 dogs that made the visit to TTHSC.  Those who came were:

1.       Fiona Seow with Quinton & Reegan/Golden Retrievers

2.       Valerie Gan with Sable/Shetland Sheepdog

3.       Wong Hui Yuan with Piggy/Chihuahua

4.       Charlie Ho – Helping Hand

5.       Jonathan Oon – Helping Hand

6.       Kylee Kwek  Helping Hand

7.       Ang Lay Hui with Hayden/CKCS

We had an observer, Koh Wei Qi, who has shown great interest in our PAT activities. I believe she will bring her dog Puppy/Mongrel to our assessor for temperament assessment. We hope she and her dog will join our team in the next month visit.  Three students from Victoria Junior College’s Pets and Animals Welfare Society (PAWS) also came for observation.  This is for future volunteers from their group.

We also welcome Jonathan and his wife Kylie joining us for the first time at TTHSC as volunteer-without-dog while waiting for their Miniature Schnauzer puppy to reach full maturity.

The hour of interaction ended well.  My heartfelt thanks to our volunteers and therapy dogs for making another afternoon of joy and unconditional love to the elderly citizens:

Your support in making the visit a wonderful day is greatly appreciated. Please keep up the good work and I hope more volunteers will come to support our next visit.

Warmest regards
